Larry M. Lockhart
Professor Larry M. Lockhart, Sr. is an 9th Degree Black Belt whose Instructor, Mr. Atlee Chittim, has been noted as the “Father of Texas Karate”.
To highlight just a few of Professor Lockhart’s accomplishments, he was ranked in the top ten Black Belts of America (rated by the Black Belt Magazine) from the late 70’s to the late 80’s. His winnings during this time include 1st Place Heavyweight U.S.K.A. World Championships, Allen Stein’s United States Karate Championships, Oklahoma Championships Champion, two-time Karate Olympiks Champion, Police Olympics Champion and undefeated San Antonio Kick-Boxing Champion. Prof. Lockhart, Sr., known as “The Technician”, has won every major event Texas has had to offer and he retired with a 98% winning record.
Professor Lockhart, Sr.’s credentials include serving 8 years as a State Trooper with the Texas Highway Patrol as well as in Personnel and Training. His Black Belt teaching career began in 1975 and continued until his retirement in 1996. Professor Lockhart, Sr. came out of retirement and began teaching again in 1998 and was presented with the Man of the Year Award by Grandmaster Abel Villarreal the very same year quoting: “...For devoted and unselfish dedication to the Martial Arts. For your discipline and leadership as a positive role model. Your constant display of proficiency, discipline, respect and honor shines among the best. Your contribution to society has been of the upmost highest. We salute you!”
He has received “four” Awards of Appreciation from Governors William P. Clements, Jr. and Ann Richards and from San Antonio Mayors Henry Cisneros and Lyla Cockrell. Professor Lockhart, Sr. was inducted into the Universal Martial Arts “Hall of Fame” in July, 2001 and was awarded the “Golden Life Achievement Award” from the USA Martial Arts “Hall of Fame” in October, 2002.
During the 90’s, Professor Lockhart, Sr. was very involved as a member of various boards including being a Member of the Board of Directors for the Davis Scott Y.M.C.A. and as Director of Martial Arts for the Downtown Y.M.C.A., Chairman of the AAU Martial Arts Program, Volunteer Teacher for the San Antonio School of the Blind. In May, 2006, World Black Belt appointed Professor Lockhart, Sr. Regional Director for South Texas. As a community oriented businessman, he has also committed his time to share his philosophies with local parent and student groups. His message to all parents: “Everything a person sets out to accomplish is because someone has instilled in them the belief that they could do it.” Children who are not sure of themselves lack confidence and will yield to the pressures of negative peer groups that will stunt their emotional growth and prevent them from actualizing their true potential.” As to the students, Professor Lockhart, Sr. tells them “not to be afraid to always do their best, regardless of what they set out to accomplish.” Professor Lockhart, Sr. continues to receive local school and parental support in spreading his message.
Professor Lockhart, Sr. currently owns and operates Family Martial Arts on Loop 410 and Marbach and continues to pass on to his students the tradition of winning in life and that true opportunity is created through hard work, preparation and commitment.
